Hello NoSo supporters and enemies, it’s your boy Baek. I hope everyone is well :-) Here are some music, movies, books, etc. I’ve been really enjoying lately!
Music:
-I’ve been listening to Violator by Depeche Mode while drawing human anatomy at night (it makes me feel like an A24 serial killer a little bit but it’s soothing) 80s Korean music, and Lauryn Hill, always. "Ex Factor” has the best hook I’ve ever heard in my life.
-Doechi!!!!!!!! What a performer!!!!!! “Denial Is A River” and “Slide” are my favorites on the record, the Colbert and Tiny Desk performances are crazy
Movies:
-The Handmaiden: I procrastinated on watching this for years (which is wild since Kim Taeri is my favorite actress and I love “Oldboy” from Mr. Park Chan Wook). I had to sit with this for a few days to truly appreciate it. Those infamous love scenes are a bit absurd, BUT! necessary for Korean audiences who would’ve written them off as friends without them. A huge step forward for Korea.
-Little Miss Sunshine: My favorite movie of all time, ever since I was 12. Back when I first saw it, I related to Olive and Dwayne, but on this re-watch I related to the parents as well. Love an ensemble dark comedy, the Miss California ice cream scene is particularly healing.
-In The Mood For Love: The most aesthetically pleasing film ever?? Beautiful costume design, they both look so elegant and there’s such impeccable x delicious tailoring on those outfits. So much acting with the eyes and yearning… loved.
TV Shows:
-Derry Girls: I am in deep mourning that there are only three seasons but I understand…
-Jeongnyeon, The Star Is Born: Everyone on this show is gay, right? Even if they won’t say it? C’mon Korea. One character seems trans to me too??
Books:
-Disability Intimacy by Alice Wong: So beautiful and informative, definitely my favorite non-fiction book this year.
-Paradise Rot by Jenny Hval: My friend Kerri recommended/lent this one to me, and it’s WILD. The most unsettling homo campus novel I’ve read. Jenny Hval’s music is amazing, I love peeking into the minds of artists through their other endeavors.
That’s all for now! See you in 2025 and keep your eyes peeled and your ears open… ;)
Xoxo,
Gossip girl
Superb taste in all the things! I am still heart broken about Derry Girls, too. 🥺
i LOVE paradise rot—read it a couple months ago in one sitting, finished it and started it again immediately. it’s so absurd and sensational
